My Career As An Artist *

Nile X (b. Dec 2005) is a self-taught painter and designer based in Toronto. He began painting and selling his work on the streets of the city at the age of twelve, working in high-traffic public spaces such as Dundas Square. Since then, his practice has expanded to include textiles and wearable art. He is currently studying Material Arts and Design at OCAD University.

Nile began his artistic journey working with acrylic paint before transitioning to oil painting by the end of 2022. He paints street scenes and often travels by bicycle, using it as a moving studio to work across different cities. His journeys have taken him from Toronto to Washington D.C and up to New York City. Toronto to Detroit and all the way to Quebec City by bicycle. Nile is currently in the process of converting an old school bus into an artist studio.

His work often is about life in the city and personal narrative painting. He also does illustrations and designs where he takes it onto textiles and garments to create walking pieces of art. He designs and crafts each piece, from textiles to coats, using painting, screen printing, and dyeing to bring his imagery to life. While he continues to paint on canvas, his practice has evolved to designing clothing into wearable art becoming part of everyday life.
